NOTHING IS FREE

Executive Produced by Sanaz Abravani, Founding Member of the Positive Technology Institute,  The Cost of Convenience is a gripping documentary that explores the trade-offs of our tech-driven world and inspires viewers to take control of their digital lives through self-education and informed choices.

From the evolution of personal computing to the rise of social media and artificial intelligence, this film unpacks the profound impact of technology on human behavior, relationships, and society. Featuring expert insights, real-world stories, and a critical look at surveillance capitalism, the documentary questions the ethical implications of a world where convenience comes at the expense of privacy, mental health, and democracy. As we embrace progress, how do we reclaim our autonomy in an age of digital manipulation?

Co-authored by Thomas Kehler, Founding Member of the Positive Technology Institute, this article published by the Brookings Institute outlines the parameters of an AI ecosystem that works for people and the planet - complementing “LLMs” with “localMs” that give communities equity in AI and agency to self-organize around shared priorities. The authors present three actionable principles for this alternative ecosystem: frame AI as a social technology, design AI that is loyal to human agency, and coordinate around big-bet applications.
